Alan Shaw, a professor of physics at the University of Leeds in England. He is also the author of "The Art and Science of Building Robots". Dr. Shaw is one of many individuals who are working to make AI's activities more visible to the public. "I am interested in how things that seem quite simple can be very complicated indeed, but still able to survive," he said. A professor with science-focused roles at both private and public institutions, Alan Shaw has been using his talents for almost half a century. He has participated in numerous conferences and publications, unfortunately limited to his university, achieving much in his careers. His research interests have covered the areas of robotics, motion control, biology, geophysics, medicine and physics. Alan Shaw has made many contributions to science throughout his life, including undergraduate work in physics at the University of Birmingham. He also began his career as a geophysicist in 1969 at an offshore oil rig near Forties Deep Water Oil Field in the North Sea. Most recently Alan Shaw worked on a project that involved gliding robots along planks suspended above rough terrain. Alan Neukirchen/Intel & Tony Goodman/DLR - "Biorobotics: Building robots that can climb vertical walls. " Aug 27, 2011. New Scientist Magazine. "Alan Shaw is a professor of control engineering at the University of Leeds in Britain. He's also a co-author on a new study in Science Robotics that reports on an experiment in which researchers strung up robots above the ground and had them walk along planks." Shaw has tracked his scientific pursuits throughout his career, including his time as an undergraduate at the University of Birmingham (BSc). After completing undergraduate studies, Shaw then accepted an offer to continue his education at the University of Plymouth (MSc). Later he became involved with the subdiscipline of geophysics, studying electron seismic refraction associated with oil exploration. After achieving his MSc in applied physics, Shaw worked in the Forties Oil field in the North Sea (1969–1971) for five years. He then returned to the University of Birmingham for his PhD in geophysics (1975). His research focused on recording seismic refractions, or echoes, when they are caused by waves traveling through layers of rock. This information is correlated with well logs (such as pressure, electrical conductivity and density measurements) to produce an image of resistive rocks. During this time period Shaw also worked part-time for two years at Keele University teaching control engineering and electronic instrumentation. In 1982 when Alan Shaw accepted a position at the University of Leeds in England, he became a full-time faculty member. In 1999, Alan Shaw published the book "The Art and Science of Building Robots", aimed at both students and professionals. In 1999 he also published the book "Automation in Manufacturing", co-authored with Richard Sherwood. In addition to his research in robotics and automation, Professor Shaw has been involved in several technology developments in the UK since 2000. He has been a consultant on a range of technologies including robotics for factories.
